Of the two main comic book Sarges, Rock always seemed the slightly more serious, realistic one, while Fury and his gang were the laff a minute 'Let's Kill Fritz!' roustabout rompers, at least when Stan was writing the book.
But The Howling Commando's wartime adventures weren't always a barrel of yoks, y'know.
In between Nick balling out the rest of the Howlers in every single panel for daring to say good morning to him, and said Howlers merrily slaughtering a thousand faceless Germans armed with nothing but a bobby pin and a quip, there were those stories that went a little bit deeper.
Like this one, from Gary Friedrich, Dick Ayers & John Severin, which has all that knockabout action and macho dialogue you'd expect. But then the laughing stops. Dead.
Under the radar, and in a book certainly our gang weren't buying, this one's a bit of a lost classic.
